Qabala, The Tree of Life
and Wicca

The Tree of Life and Wiccan Practice

The Tree of Life is a magnificent structure for attainment of one’s goals in both the spiritual and the physical realms. Although typical Wiccan practice utilizes a standardized structure for the presentation of ritual, the timing of spiritual celebration and observance (Sabbats and Esbats), there is no specific structure for the attainment of daily, weekly, or monthly goals. The Tree of Life provides this structure through specific and intensive work upon the 10 Sephiroth and the 22 paths of the Tree. The Tree of Life is also an excellent diagram for understanding the energies of various pagan deities and the nature of the Lord and Lady.

How does Qabala relate to Wicca?

Qabala is an ancient system for understanding spiritual and magickal energies. It has been developed over the centuries out of a profound understanding of the human spirit and its relation to the natural and supernatural world. It is organized into a central pattern called The Tree of Life, which contains ten powerful energy centers, called Sephiroth, and three pillars of existence: Force, Form, and Equilibrium. Directly comparable to the energies of the Lord and Lady in Wiccan practice are the top Sephiroth on each of the two outside pillars of the Qabalistic Tree of Life, the pillars of Force and Form. In Qabala as well as Wicca, the God and the Goddess are both powerfully and equally honored.

In fact, all the various pagan gods and goddesses are represented in different places on the Qabalistic Tree of Life, and the structure of the Tree can help us understand the energy forces represented by these deities.

Both Qabala and Wicca help individuals to make a closer connection with the divine. Personal development as a result of this connection is implicit in Wicca, but the Qabalistic Tree of Life provides a map and structure for how this development can proceed. Qabala can bring a discipline and structure to Wicca that is sometimes missing.

How does Wicca relate to Qabala?

There is a good deal of overlap in the practices of Wiccan circles and many Qabalistic lodges. For example: They both use sacred space encompassed in a circle. They both use Quarter Guardians that represent the elements. They are both concerned with using magick to make positive changes on the earthly plane. Both use the pentagram as an energetic symbol.

Wicca can bring to Qabala playfulness and spontaneity that is, in our experience, lacking in rituals that are pure Qabala. For us, playfulness and spontaneity are qualities that greatly enhance ritual.

Both systems treat the World of Manifestation as sacred. However, Wicca, with its Esbats and Sabbats, brings an earthiness to Qabala – which can get pretty overwhelmingly intellectual. Wicca is, after all, a Nature Religion, a this-world-centered religion. The combination of Qabalistic structure and Wiccan energies is very powerful.
